Antiviral drug Zovirax
Zovirax is an antiviral drug, which is prescribed for the treatment of herpes infections of the skin, lips, genitals and also against herpes zoster.
Zovirax does not completely cure the herpes but only gives some relief from the pain and itching. Zovirax comes in tablet, capsule and suspended form. The drug, which contains the active ingredient aciclovir, works by preventing the herpes virus from multiplying.
The drug can be taken with food or in empty stomach. It is better to take the drug with food to avoid stomach upset. The treatment with Zovirax drug has to begin soon after the first signs of herpes like blisters, tingling and burning. When you take Zovirax, the doctors also prescribe an applicator to prevent the herpes from spreading to other parts of the body. You have to always keep the lesions caused by herpes viruses clean and dry.
The drug has to be taken only according to your doctor’s direction. Never stop the drug in between even if you get some relief. When talking about the doses, do not miss any dosage as missing a dose will not give good results. But you can take the drug if you remember about the missed dose before the next scheduled time. However, skip the missed one if it is time for your regular doses. Mixing two doses will not deliver any result but only can do more harm.
Well, if you suspect an overdose, seek immediate help before the symptoms worsen. Some of the overdose symptoms include hallucinations, seizure and urinating less.
Before your doctor decides to administer Zovirax, you have to tell him about all your health conditions and also about all your allergic reactions. Let the doctor know if you have any allergies to any medicine, food or any substance, including Zovirax ingredients. Doctors may not prescribe the drug if you have allergies to acyclovir and propylene glycol.
The drug is FDA pregnancy category B. This means that Zovirax does not harm the unborn babe. But even then it is better for pregnant women to discuss with the doctor about all the risks involved in taking the drug during pregnancy. Women who breast-feed should avoid feeding the new born when using the Zovirax as the drug is traced in breast milk.
As said earlier, the drug does not cure the infection but only relives it. In that case, persons with the herpes should not come in contact with others as it can only spread the virus.
Zovirax is also known to interact with other drugs. Therefore tell your doctor about all the over-the-counter drugs and prescriptive drugs that you are taking.
When taking Zovirax, you have to be aware of the allergic reactions and also the side effects. Urinating less, pain in the lower back part, easy bruising and unusual weakness are some of the severe side effects that come with Zovirax. You may also come across nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, appetite loss, stomach pain, headache and swelling in hands or feet.
